"No Such Thing as a Life that's Better than Yours!" - Maintaining Social Media Image

Hello, and welcome back! This week I want to talk about how I maintain my image on social media.  Anybody who has social media accounts uses some sort of strategy to make themselves appear a certain way online.  Here's how I do it...

First of all, I'm guilty of some things on social media that I probably shouldn't be so worried about. For example, I post more frequently about the "highs" in my life, and rarely, if at all, broadcast my "lows."  This is problematic.  It causes my audience to create an image of my life as being perfect or better than theirs, when I'm probably going through things as bad as (if not worse than) the hardships they are experiencing too.  I try to build some sort of balance between posting the highs and lows, or at least cutting back on posting anything at all.

Here I am attempting to appear as if I was dunking...Really I was just standing on a bleacher under the net. This is an example how we use social media outlets to deceive our followers.

Going along with that, there are some days when I literally do nothing the entire day.  And will you see a Snapchat Story up from me that day? Nope.  But the days when I'm doing cool things like traveling or hanging out at the beach or with friends, you better believe you'll know about it.  WHY AM I LIKE THIS?! The truth is, most of us are.  We want our lives to appear perfect at all times.  The key is to find a way to maintain a realistic image of who you really are.

Here are my tips for creating an appropriate but also realistic social media presence:
1. You don't have to post anything just to prove that you did it! Be in the moment and post if you want, but don't feel like you need validation from those who watch your Snapchat Stories or like your Instagram photos.
2. Don't compare yourself to others.  When someone else posts about something fun they're doing, don't think your life is any less fun. Realize YOUR blessings!
3. Be a little mysterious.  Don't post EVERYTHING you do...leave something to the imagination of your followers!
4. Take a social media cleanse.  This is one of the most liberating things you can do for your own health.  Give up your favorite social media sites for a week or even just a day. You'd be amazed at how much you've been missing in the world.

I hope these tips are helpful and remember, as J.Cole says, "No such thing as a life that's better than yours."
