WHY I DON'T HAVE FACEBOOK OR TWITTER
Welcome back! This week is all about Facebook and Twitter...and why I don't use them.
Quick disclaimer before I start: everything I'm about to express is my own opinion and I do not judge or criticize those who do use Facebook or Twitter. I just don't and I'm here to tell you why.
Social media for me has always been a touchy subject. I had strong opinions about it in high school because I found myself the only one in my friend group without a Facebook/Twitter/Instagram account. When I would go out to eat or hang out with my friends, they would all be refreshing their social media constantly and turning to each other saying, "OMG did you see this?!" and I became annoyed that we rarely had actual conversations anymore. I know what you're thinking: "Jen, why didn't you just make a Facebook/Twitter/Instagram so that you'd be included?" Believe me, I wanted to. But when I was in high school, my parents did not want me to have a Facebook. I don't exactly know why, but I'm sure it's probably the same reason that I'm about to explain to you as to why I still don't have one. Maybe it's silly that my parents didn't want me to have one, and even sillier that I even asked their permission instead of just doing it myself, but I have an insane amount of respect for my parents, so I upheld their wishes.
Fast forward, and I found myself in college. Still, I didn't have any social media besides Snapchat, and I was living my best life. Though I'm more introverted than extroverted, I prefer face-to-face interaction than talking through a screen. After meeting my current boyfriend, Vaughn, and finding a group of friends, I was faced with many complaints about my lack of social media. I realized that many people wanted me to have Instagram at least so that they could tag me in their posts. So, after losing a bet to Vaughn, I had to make an Instagram. I don't regret this, as Instagram has helped me to realize the value of having an online presence in some form (as I talked about in the last two weeks' blogs).
Today I still don't have Facebook or Twitter. Yeah, I know that Facebook owns Instagram so technically I'm on Facebook, but I don't have an active account. Here's why:
Facebook is just too much for me. I don't know how to work it, there's too much political drama on it for me, and I am just not interested. I understand that people like Facebook to stay connected to people back home, but I'd honestly rather call them. Now that my generation isn't as obsessed with Facebook as they were in the past, it is easier for me to get by without having it.
I don't have as strong of an opinion about Twitter as I do Facebook. With Twitter, I frankly don't care. Don't get me wrong, I care a LOT about other people and I enjoy hearing about what they are up to. But I don't want to spend my time scrolling through Twitter just to see tweets about how someone had cereal for breakfast this morning or how much this one girl hates her ex best friend. And I know, this isn't ALL Twitter is, but it's really just not for me.
The root of why I don't use Facebook or Twitter is simple. I try to limit myself to not having too many social media accounts because they take up valuable time and take away from the real connections that could be had. Bottom line: they are distractions.
Remember, these are just my opinions and in no way am I forcing you to agree with me; in fact, most of you probably disagree. And that's ok. All love.
